A worm gear reducer is used to increase torque while reducing output speed usage. However, the worm gear reducer is unique in that it includes a worm (a cylindrical screw with a reduced gear ratio), which is set at a 90 degree angle to the worm wheel, and the worm wheel requires less space than the spur gear.
The worm gear reducer starts the worm wheel running in only one direction, with greater friction between the worm and worm wheel, and is unable to drive the worm backwards, which makes the worm wheel ideal for production operations in the industrial sector. In this case, reversal of the direction of transmission may cause danger or damage to the equipment to which it is connected, hence the choice of a worm gear reducer to control heavy equipment.
The choice to use a worm gear reducer with gears mounted at a 90 degree angle to the input shaft on the output shaft frees both ends of the output shaft. In addition both solid and hollow output shaft end equipment can be used with a worm gear reducer as belts or chains are no longer required to transmit torque, again meaning less need for maintenance of rotating parts.
