Realize low-speed high torque
In some situations, the required speed is relatively small, but the torque is also relatively large. If the motor speed is controlled very low, some motors may not run at low speeds, especially stepper motors. We can use a gearbox to solve the problem, as its function is to reduce speed and increase output torque.

▲ Speed and torque curve of stepper motor
For example, the speed of a stepper motor is generally selected as 300-600 revolutions per minute, but in reality, the speed is less than 100 revolutions per minute and the torque needs to be higher. If a stepper motor is directly connected, the speed will be relatively low, and the low-speed performance of the stepper motor is not very good. In this case, a reducer with a reduction ratio of 5 can be added, so that the motor runs at 500 revolutions per minute, and the output speed of the reducer is 100 revolutions per minute. This not only meets the requirements of low-speed operation, but also ensures sufficient torque output.

More cost-effective
Sometimes when the motor speed meets the requirements but the torque is high, method one can choose a motor with higher power. However, this method may not necessarily have the highest cost-effectiveness, as the higher the power of the motor, the higher the price. The second method is to choose a reducer. If a reducer is selected, it can meet the requirements of operating speed, increase the output torque, and save costs and space. The advantages of using a reducer are very obvious.
Protect the motor
Due to the addition of a gearbox, the load directly acts on the gearbox, and the force borne by the motor will be much smaller, providing protection for the motor. Especially in the case of overload, the damage to the motor caused by the load without a gearbox is relatively significant.
Overloading may cause damage to the mechanism. If only the gearbox is damaged, replacing the gearbox is more cost-effective. If the motor is directly connected to the load and overloaded, it is easy to damage the motor, and the cost of replacing the motor is relatively high. If the gearbox is replaced, the cost will be much lower.

When choosing a reducer, it is generally possible to find a matching reducer model based on the motor model, and then select the appropriate reducer based on relevant parameters such as speed, torque, reduction ratio, installation method, and installation size.
