RV gearbox 'life extending secret': from wear to smoothness, only one bottle of lubricating grease is needed
In the "joints" of high-speed operation of robots, RV reducers can be called the core "heart". But many engineers have found that their own equipment frequently malfunctions - the problem may lie in the choice of lubricating grease!

The importance of lubricating grease (the foundation of "extending life")
Reduce friction and wear: Form an oil film on key contact surfaces such as gear meshing and bearing rolling, directly preventing dry friction between metals, which is fundamental to extending lifespan.
Heat dissipation: Part of the heat generated during operation is dissipated through the conduction of lubricating grease.
Corrosion prevention: isolate air and moisture to protect metal parts from rusting.
Sealed dust prevention: To some extent, it prevents external impurities (dust, moisture, metal shavings) from entering the precision interior.
Reduce noise and vibration: A good oil film can cushion impact, making operation smoother and quieter.
Why is' only one bottle missing 'a dangerous simplification?
What is' one bottle '? ——Incorrect selection equals accelerated death:
Viscosity: RV reducers have extremely high requirements for the viscosity of lubricating grease. If it is too thin (low viscosity), it cannot form a sufficient oil film. If it is too thick (high viscosity), it will increase operating resistance, heat generation, and cause power loss or even damage.
Consistency: The NLGI grade should be appropriate, too soft is prone to leakage, and too hard is difficult to reach the lubrication point.
Base oil type: Synthetic oil (such as PAO) typically has better high and low temperature performance, oxidation stability, and lifespan than mineral oil.
Additives: extreme pressure anti-wear agents, antioxidants, rust inhibitors, anti foaming agents, and other formulations must be designed for high load and high-precision working conditions of the gearbox.
Compatibility: Mixing different brands and types of lubricants may result in a sharp decline in performance or even clumping. The wrong choice, even the most advanced lubricating grease is poison.
How to add 'one bottle'? ——Improper operation can become a killer:
Clean up! Clean up! Clean up! Before filling, the oil filling port must be thoroughly cleaned! Any particles brought in are abrasives that accelerate wear. It is recommended to use specialized oiling tools (such as manual/electric grease guns equipped with cleaning joints).
The quantity should be precise:
Initial filling: Strictly follow the filling amount and position specified in the manufacturer's manual. Insufficient lubrication can result in abnormal temperature rise, seal damage, and excessive internal pressure leading to oil leakage.
Supplement/Replacement: It is also necessary to supplement according to the prescribed amount in the manual, or completely remove the old grease and add new grease according to the initial installation amount. Blind addition can lead to mixing of new and old fats, contamination, and decreased performance.
Discharge old grease (when replacing): When replacing lubricating grease, it is necessary to thoroughly remove old grease and internal pollutants as much as possible. Simply squeezing in new grease will push old grease and debris deeper.
When will 'one bottle' be added? ——The timing is not right, twice the result is half the effort:
Initial lubrication: After new or major repairs, it is necessary to use the manufacturer's specified lubricating grease and add it in the appropriate amount.
After the running in period: After running the new machine for a period of time (such as 50-100 hours), the lubricating grease must be replaced! This is a crucial step in removing metal debris generated by initial wear and tear. Missing this replacement is equivalent to running the gearbox with damage.
Regular replacement: This is the most essential "life extension" operation! The replacement cycle depends on:
Manufacturer's regulation: This is the most important basis.
Actual operating conditions: load intensity, working temperature (high temperature greatly accelerates oil oxidation), operating time, environment (dust, humidity), start stop frequency, etc. Severe working conditions require a significant reduction in the grease replacement cycle.
The lifespan of the oil itself: High quality specialized synthetic fats have a longer lifespan than ordinary mineral fats.
Condition monitoring: Regularly check the condition of the oil (color, odor, impurities, dryness and hardness), the operating temperature of the gearbox, noise, vibration, etc. If any abnormalities are found (such as severe blackening of grease, presence of metal shavings, burnt smell, or abnormal temperature rise), the lubricating grease should be immediately inspected and replaced.
The RV reducer worm gear is made of hard steel, and the worm gear is generally made of non-ferrous metal alloys. Compared to the material of the worm gear, the material of the worm wheel is much softer, so when meshing occurs, the metal on the surface of the worm wheel will stick to the helical surface of the worm, forming grooves on the working tooth surface of the worm wheel.
When the lubricating oil is not clean or the amount of lubricating oil is insufficient and not replaced or replenished in a timely manner, it will affect the formation of oil film between metals.
If the gearbox is forced to operate under poor lubrication, it will not only increase the frictional heat and affect the transmission efficiency of the worm gear, but also increase the wear of the worm gear.
From this, it can be seen that lubricating grease is the most basic condition for ensuring the normal operation of worm gear reducers. Because lubricating grease can form an oil film on the contact surface of the worm gear, thereby avoiding direct contact between metals and effectively reducing wear.
